This is not usually the type of spiritual book I read; however, I was more than pleasantly surprised by Alice Grist’s take on spirituality for the modern woman. It was deep; it was thorough; it was gentle but it is worth pointing out that it was brutally honest in places too. It reminds us that we are not perfect, and in all probability, never will be, especially if we have a penchant for ‘bitching, moaning and whining’. However, what it does stress is that it is possible to live in the modern world and yet also live a spiritual existence. In many ways, this book is perfect.
Even though the chapters are called lessons, do not think for one moment that the author is setting herself as your teacher; this book is here to help you find your spiritual self, to illuminate the way on your own individual path, it can’t do it for you. The author walks you through the phases she went through on her personal spiritual journey, sharing her experiences with you along the way. She discusses such topics as spirituality, faith, the natural world, the goddess and love, as well as a plethora of other subjects too. It is a rich read, full of information and yet you will also find humour in her words.
One of the main messages repeated throughout this book is that “you are spiritual because you are spirit”, and it is a message that often gets lost in amongst the drama of everyday life. It also stresses that teachers and gurus can be good, but they are not a necessity to uncovering your spiritual self. After all, spirituality is not a ‘one size fits all’ item; it is as unique and as individual as each of us. Through the book Alice demonstrates this in a very readable, acceptable fashion. She doesn’t tell you it’s easy when it isn’t, but neither does she say it’s impossible.
All-in-all, this book is an enlightening, empowering read that will inspire those searching for a way to access spirituality. For those already on a spiritual path you may find that this book reaffirms that which you already know, and aid you in getting back on track, if needs be. It is certainly well worth a read, and I dare say, a book you will return to.
