Book Review: Paranormalcy by Kiersten White

paranormalcy front cover by kiersten whiteParanormalcy is the first book in the series of the same name by Kiersten White.

Sixteen year old Evie is the only person capable of seeing through a paranormal glamour.  That is why she works for the IPCA, the International Paranormal Containment Agency.  However, all she wants is a normal life; to go to a normal school, have normal friends and to go to the prom.  But the problem is, she isn’t normal.

Furthermore, when paranormals begin dying it seems that something or someone is targeting them, but why?  And what does it have to do with Evie?  Will she be able to stop who is behind it before it is too late?

Paranormalcy was an interesting read.  I enjoyed how the various paranormal creatures were present in the story and how they interacted.  The storyline was engaging, as were the characters, on the whole.  My favourite, I think, was either the faery, Reth, or Alisha the mermaid, the latter being a fresh addition to the usual vampire / werewolf / zombie paranormal fare.

This book, quite literally, has it all.  Vampires, werewolves, mermaids, fairies, love, danger, prophecies, conflict, loss…If you like your paranormal fiction in the Young Adult category, you might want to give Paranormalcy a read.

I would definitely be interested in reading the second book in the series, Supernaturally, to see how the story and the characters develop.
