The Clan of the Cave Bear, (Earth’s Children #1) by Jean M. Auel
I love all the book covers (in this particular style) from the Earth’s Children series by Jean M. Auel. The colours and fonts are so evocative, but it is the cave-art inspired illustrations that I find really captures the essence of the story, and my imagination.
I was at university when, visiting a book shop in the town, I saw the first four books of the series wonderfully displayed. They immediately caught my attention, and I instantly fell in love with them. I didn’t even bother to read the back of any of the four books or wonder what they were about. I simply picked up a copy of each and went off to pay for them. I just knew I had to have them and that I would love them. And I did!
Have you ever had that response to a book? What was it? After reading it, did you feel your initial thoughts were spot-on or did the amazing cover art lead you astray?

I enjoyed going back to the review and reading our discussion about it. My sister is reading this series and really likes it. When I saw her two weeks ago (over the holidays), she explained much of the plot and characters of the first two (I think) books. I can definitely see the appeal! She’s really drawn into the drama with the main character, and (like many readers, I imagine) doesn’t really care whether it’s historically accurate, because “it’s fiction” after all. But later, she said she’s “learning so much” about that period, suggesting that at some level, she’s treating it as fact. ((sigh)) Ah, well. I’m just happy to see her reading fiction at all; I won’t dissuade her from this.

It was a fascinating discussion, which is one of the best things about book reviews. It’s hard to know which facts are now considered out-dated and which ones are not, but as you say, it’s nice to see someone reading fiction if they usually don’t 🙂
