The Very Informal Classic Reads Book Club Challenge 2021

In an attempt to read more classics each year, I thought it would be interesting to start (another) reading challenge. With the aim of reading one a month, I’ve set out which books and which authors I’m planning on reading in 2021:

Book List 2021

  • January – The Island of Doctor Moreau by H.G. Wells
  • February – Lady Audley’s Secret by Mary Elizabeth Braddon
  • March – The Last Of The Mohicans by James Fenimore Cooper
  • April – Wuthering Heights by Emily Brontë
  • May – David Copperfield by Charles Dickens
  • June – Northanger Abbey by Jane Austen
  • July – The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexandre Dumas
  • August – Silas Marner by George Elliot
  • September – The Picture of Dorian Gray
  • October – The Epic of Gilgamesh
  • November – The Woman in White by Wilkie Collins
  • December – Return of The Native by Thomas Hardy

I’ve tried to include a varied selections of books, not only ones written by white, English-speaking men who hailed from England.  There are books by women, a new-world author, an Irish author, a non-English-speaking European author, as well as a non-Western classic.

If you would like to join in and read along with me, please do! It is your choice as to what version of these stories you read, whether they are abridged, accompanied by notes, explanations and historical context, etc., or even if you choose to listen to the audiobook. Then, look out my my classic reads book review for the month, and in the comment section share a link to your own review / thoughts or write them directly in the comments!
